Defensive driving techniques are built into our driver training courses to give you the skills and confidence you need to pass your driving test or become a better driver all around.

But what exactly is defensive driving?

Defensive driving is a set of driving techniques and strategies designed to reduce the risk of accidents and increase the safety of the driver, passengers, and others on the road. Defensive driving involves being aware of potential hazards and dangers on the road and taking proactive steps to avoid them. Some common defensive driving techniques include:

1. Keeping a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you. This technique will give you the chance to anticipate the actions of other drivers and be prepared to react quickly if something were to go wrong.

2. Scanning the road ahead and being aware of potential hazards such as pedestrians, bicyclists, especially in urban areas.

3. Maintaining a safe speed and avoiding distractions such as texting, eating, or using a mobile phone while driving. Speed cameras are common on many roads in England, and it is important to give the road your undivided attention.

4. Using indicators and making your intentions clear to other drivers on the road when changing lanes or turning, as failing to do so can result in a fine. Do this in good time and not at the last moment, is also something to actively do.

5. Being aware of road conditions and adjusting your driving accordingly, such as slowing down on wet or icy roads, paying close attention to roundabouts, and being aware of the "box junction" rule, which prohibits drivers from entering a junction unless their exit is clear.

By practicing defensive driving, drivers can reduce the likelihood of accidents and improve their safety on the road.
